Before
After
Miniature air pump: Inflates the cuff and maintains sufficient pressure for measurement in a compact space.
Special cuff: Designed to fit the wrist. Usually narrower to ensure effective contact with the wrist artery and uniform pressure application.
High-precision pressure sensor: Accurately records pressure changes in the cuff during measurement and captures the small oscillometric signals superimposed on it. Measurement accuracy: ±3 mmHg.
It uses the oscillometric method, similar to conventional upper-arm electronic monitors.
Inflation: The cuff inflates, gradually blocking blood flow at the wrist.
Deflation & detection: The cuff slowly releases pressure. Blood begins to flow through the compressed artery, causing vibrations in the arterial wall. The sensor detects these tiny oscillations superimposed on the cuff pressure.
Algorithm interpretation: Oscillation amplitude reaches a maximum at a certain pressure level. Using specific algorithms, the device calculates systolic (high) and diastolic (low) pressures.
Follow proper procedures: Read the manual carefully and follow instructions regarding posture, rest, and cuff placement.
Measure multiple times: Take 2–3 consecutive readings under the same conditions and use the average. Focus on long-term trends rather than single values.
Calibration and comparison: Periodically compare with a validated upper-arm monitor to understand any systematic deviations.
Monitor long-term trends: Track resting heart rate, sleep patterns, activity, and (when used correctly) blood pressure trends. Useful for chronic condition management.
Screen for specific risks: Single-lead ECG can help detect atrial fibrillation, aiding stroke prevention.
Encourage healthy behavior: Activity rings, sleep scores, and gamified features motivate healthier lifestyle choices.
